Havant Borough Council aims to eradicate homelessness in the borough by agreeing to support the refurbishment of Brent House, Middle Park Way, Leigh Park.

A grant awarded to local housing association Two Saints will enable the currently unoccupied building, which has been used as temporary accommodation for more than 20 years, to be renovated.

Once work is complete the large property will provide 29 temporary homes for families and single people who find themselves homeless.

Currently the council relies on the privately rented sector and bed & breakfast accommodation.

Councillor Leah Turner, Cabinet Lead for Coastal Communities, said: "We remain committed to doing everything we can to eradicate homelessness and additional accommodation space, such as this, will allow us to help vulnerable people to find a route off the streets.

"Currently the council only has access to five units of temporary accommodation in the borough. This means when people come to our housing team for help, we sometimes have to accommodate them outside of the borough."

Two Saints is a local housing association, formed in 2001, to provide housing and support for vulnerable people. They also provide day centres, community support, housing and landlord support as well as outreach to rough sleepers. Providing accommodation in Brent House will allow them to deliver a complete wrap around service to residents. 

Background 

In January this year Havant Borough Council approved the adoption of the Homelessness and Rough Sleepers Strategy and Action Plan 2019-2024.

The four key priorities of the adopted Homelessness and Rough Sleepers Strategy and Action Plan 2019-24 are:

  • To ensure all our customers are provided with appropriate advice, assistance and support to enable them to address their housing needs and to lead independent lives
  • Consider more sustainable housing solutions for those facing homelessness and on the Housing Register
  • Prevent and Relieve homelessness by working in partnership with statutory and voluntary sector agencies to identify the threat of homelessness at the earliest opportunity, and work together to ensure appropriate support services are accessible.
  • To understand the needs and requirements of those rough sleeping and sofa surfing
