Southampton Approves Additional Licencing
Southampton City Council has approved the designation of an Additional HMO licensing scheme to take effect from September 2025 for five years in 8 council wards.
A little more detail
Not much is known yet - even the date of introduction is suitably vague 'from September' and given that there needs to be a 3-month window between the decision (known as a designation) and when it comes into force, we are assuming that 'September' actually means sometime after September but if you are an affected landlord we recommend you approach Soton council as soon as possible to ensure that you receive news as this scheme develops.
What we know so far is that it will be introduced in:
- Banister & Polygon,
- Bargate,
- Bassett,
- Bevois,
- Freemantle,
- Portswood,
- Shirley & Millbrook,
- Swaythling
And the scheme will cover all shared houses of 3 or 4 occupants in those wards are to be licenced, but interestingly and unlike Portsmouth, not section 257 buildings.
We advise any affected members to periodically check Southampton City Council website for emerging details in the coming weeks.
About the author
Martin began his landlord journey 30 years ago, while working in an international role for a global telecommunications company. Since retiring he has extended his portfolio, which he manages with his wife, but has always focussed on the ‘small student HMO’ sector preferring to offer homes in the community for small groups to the more common ‘pack them in and take the money’ mentality. He has chaired the PDPLA for the past 12 years and has overseen the Associations transition from small local self-help group to a much larger and more professional institution which is recognised and listened to nationally. Alongside his PDPLA role, he also has leadership roles in a number of other local organisations – bringing his unique perspective, driving for change and increased use of technology while respecting the history that brought us here.
