Portsmouth Goes Live With Universal Credit
Whilst the full switch over to Universal Credit does not happen in Portsmouth until September, the area became a 'Live Service' area, so some single jobseekers could claim Universal Credit (UC) during March.
We are hoping to have someone from the Department of Work and Pensions attend our June members meeting to talk to us about the processes around UC and some of the support available.
Staff at Portsmouth City Council have advised us that local authorities have no control or influence over the roll out timetable. Portsmouth is much later in the roll out than Southampton (which was just the way that DWP designed the roll out).
The full service was going to be introduced in Portsmouth and Cosham in June 2018, but it is now going to be September 2018. This decision was made as part of the Autumn budget, when the government made a number of changes to UC regulations, and recognised that they needed to slow down the roll out to improve the delivery of UC in each area.
We've put this page on our website to give people the latest position on UC in Portsmouth, and links to some useful info resources.
About the author
Martin began his landlord journey 30 years ago, while working in an international role for a global telecommunications company. Since retiring he has extended his portfolio, which he manages with his wife, but has always focussed on the ‘small student HMO’ sector preferring to offer homes in the community for small groups to the more common ‘pack them in and take the money’ mentality. He has chaired the PDPLA for the past 12 years and has overseen the Associations transition from small local self-help group to a much larger and more professional institution which is recognised and listened to nationally. Alongside his PDPLA role, he also has leadership roles in a number of other local organisations – bringing his unique perspective, driving for change and increased use of technology while respecting the history that brought us here.
