Recommended Traders / Suppliers
The list of suppliers used by members and recommended to other members, many of whom are willing to give a discount to PDPLA members has grown to 45 companies this year - covering everything from bedding and carpet specialists to electricians and electrical wholesalers, legal and financial professionals and many others who support our industry.
Going forward, we do need to keep this list current and we can only do that with member input, whether that be recommending new suppliers or feeding back on existing ones. So please let us know your thoughts in this area.
Additonally, we need to better integrate this service with the

B&Q Tradepoint
Last year we introduced the B&Q TradePoint card which members used to purchase nearly £100,000 worth of goods (we estimate they saved between fifteen and twenty thousand pounds). This is probably the most widely used benefit for around 150 members having used their card. As always, if you have multiple cards we do recommend that you use the PDPLA one - we believe you will get better discounts with that one compared to others and it will help us justify the continued discount levels.
Website, Facebook & Newsletter
Facebook appears to have limited traction within our member base and not much outside of it, but we continue to use it to notify of new news items as they are added to the website - so if you want to know what is going on before everyone else, do follow us on Facebook.
By comparison the newsletter and the website appear to be much better appreciated within the membership, with varying levels of activity but a typical month will see more than 500 unique visitors to the site with a peak around the newsletter where we often see 100 different people on the site in a single day. A typical visitor will view 4-5 pages so we feel we have the balance right and it looks like people are finding what they need and coming back when they need to - but you need to tell us, what news items are most useful to you? What documents in the 'Useful Documents" section are most useful? What else would you like to see?
Interestingly, the most visited page amongst the news items last year was the Property 118 item about tax changes. The next most visited page (ignoring login and other admin pages) was our recommended suppliers list and the 3rd and 4th places in the web popularity chart were occupied by our news page and our weblinks - so if you are not using this to support you in your day to day business we urge you to do so.
About the author
Martin began his landlord journey 18 years ago, while working in an international role for a global telecommunications company. Since retiring he has extended his portfolio, which he manages with his wife, but has always focussed on the ‘small student HMO’ sector preferring to offer homes in the community for small groups to the more common ‘pack them in and take the money’ mentality. He has chaired the PDPLA for the past 9 years and has overseen the Associations transition from small local self-help group to a much larger and more professional institution which is recognised and listened to nationally. Alongside his PDPLA role, he also has leadership roles in a number of other local organisations – bringing his unique perspective, driving for change and increased use of technology while respecting the history that brought us here.
