If Only People Understood Section 21 Reforms
We publish here an exchange between Roger Bell the South Hampshire Chair of iHOWZ Landlords Association and someone called Jake responding on behalf of Secretary of State, Michael Gove
Roger's Intro
I wrote to Michael Gove telling him what damage the Renters Reform Bill would do to legitimate experienced and considerate landlords running good Buy To Let businesses. Such landlords only need Section 21 rarely, as tenants knew that they could be removed if they misbehaved. In other words there is discipline in the Private Rental Sector which is absent from the Public / Social Rented Sector which is in disarray and failing in every city and town in UK.
Jake's Response
Roger's Exasperation
This reply from 'Jake' is laughable.
Clearly no one in Westminster has the foggiest clue about how to run a business or look after tenants as well as we do.
In ten years' time when the whole private rental sector has collapsed and there is widespread homelessness with tenants being abused by the only landlords who want to be in the industry by then someone will reintroduce S21.
Happily I will be looking down from above by then.
About the author
Martin began his landlord journey 30 years ago, while working in an international role for a global telecommunications company. Since retiring he has extended his portfolio, which he manages with his wife, but has always focussed on the ‘small student HMO’ sector preferring to offer homes in the community for small groups to the more common ‘pack them in and take the money’ mentality. He has chaired the PDPLA for the past 12 years and has overseen the Associations transition from small local self-help group to a much larger and more professional institution which is recognised and listened to nationally. Alongside his PDPLA role, he also has leadership roles in a number of other local organisations – bringing his unique perspective, driving for change and increased use of technology while respecting the history that brought us here.
